What Size Art Above a Couch? A Simple Guide

How wide and how high should art above a sofa be? Simple rules for size, height and layout, plus which portrait sizes work for your couch.

Framed portrait hanging above a sofa in a living room

The two-thirds rule

The most common mistake with art above a couch is choosing something too small. A single small frame above a wide sofa looks lost. Interior designers use a simple guideline: art above a couch should be about two thirds of the couch's width. That can be one large piece or several smaller pieces hung as a group.

  • 6-foot couch: art about 4 feet wide in total
  • 7-foot couch: art about 4.5 to 5 feet wide
  • 8-foot couch: art about 5 to 5.5 feet wide

How high to hang it

Leave 6 to 10 inches between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame. Higher than that and the art floats away from the couch; lower and people bump it with their heads. Center the art on the couch, not on the wall, especially if the couch is not centered in the room.

Portrait or landscape?

A wide sofa usually calls for a landscape piece or a row of pieces. A portrait-orientation painting works well above a smaller couch or armchair, or as part of a pair. When you create a painted portrait with us, you can choose between portrait and landscape orientation.

Which portrait size fits your couch?

Our fine art prints and canvases come in three sizes: 12 × 16 in, 16 × 20 in and 20 × 28 in (or the landscape versions). Here is how they work above a sofa:

  • One large portrait: a 28 × 20 in landscape canvas works as a single centerpiece above a loveseat or armchair.
  • Two portraits side by side: two 28 × 20 in landscape canvases with 3 to 4 inches between them are about 5 feet wide, close to two thirds of a 7-foot sofa.
  • A gallery wall: combine one 20 × 28 in portrait with smaller frames for a larger, more personal arrangement.

Framed canvas or print?

A framed canvas has the most presence and needs no extra frame, which suits a living room wall. A fine art print is lighter and more affordable, and looks great in a frame of your choice. Read more about the options on our canvas and framed canvas pages.

Quick checklist

  • Measure the width of your couch and aim for about two thirds of it.
  • Keep 6 to 10 inches between the sofa and the bottom of the frame.
  • Choose landscape or a group of frames for wide sofas.
  • Center the art on the couch.

Frequently asked questions

How wide should art above a couch be?
A good rule of thumb is about two thirds of the width of the couch. For a 7-foot sofa, that means a piece or a group of pieces around 4 to 5 feet wide.
How high should I hang art above a couch?
Leave about 6 to 10 inches between the top of the sofa back and the bottom of the frame, so the art feels connected to the couch.
What if my portrait is smaller than two thirds of the couch?
Hang two or three portraits side by side as a group, or combine one portrait with other frames. Together they can fill the space.
